Chapter 4 PRAYING FOR UNITY
SWBAT:  reflect upon the differences between people and to consider ways to resolve those differences.  Discuss ways that unity and diversity are reflected in the Church.  Acknowledge Jesus' call for Christian unity.

8TH GRADE SOCIAL STUDIES

Chapter 21 A New Urban Culture
Section 1 New Immigrants in a Promised Land
SWBAT:  explore the reasons as to why immigrants came to America.  Discuss ways immigrants made the journey and ways they adapted to American life.
Section 2 An Age of Cities
SWBAT:  discuss how cities experienced a population explosion.  List the problems that settlement house workers had to solve.  Discuss the Settlement House Movement.
Section 3 Life in the Changing Cities
SWBAT:  discuss building booms.  Explore how building booms affected city life.  Discuss why sports were so popular and explore the forms of entertainment city dwellers enjoyed. 
Section 4 Public Education and American Culture
SWBAT:  discuss public education and how it grew after the Civil War.  Explore how newspapers, magazines, and dime novels reflected change in reading habits.

8TH GRADE SCIENCE
Chapter 23 Immunity and Disease
Section 1 The Immune System
SWBAT:  describe the natural defenses your body has against disease.  Explain the difference between an antigen and an antibody.  Compare and contrast active and passive immunity.
Section 2 Infectious Diseases
SWBAT:  identify diseases caused by viruses and bacteria.  List sexually transmitted diseases, their causes, and treatments.  Explain how HIV affects the immune system.
Section 3 Noninfectious Diseases
SWBAT:  define noninfectious diseases and list causes of them.  Describe the basic characteristics of cancer.  Explain what happens during an allergic reaction.  Explain how chemicals in the environment can be harmful to humans.
